removing wired alarm system

Hi, I'm thinking of taking out my older wired alarm (SECURIT 700L ) , and replacing with a yale wireless one. How do I do this ?.
I've noticed there's a large white box in the attic where all the wires lead to and which I think contains a battery. There is also a fused spur which isolates it all i think. Obviously, I have these small white wires snaking all over the house. Can I leave these buried when the box is removed?.

any thoughts appreciated

p.s. Not just doing this on a whim. doing a lot of decorating and this would be the ideal time to do it.

If you already have a wired system personally I think you would be mad to change to a wireless. Sure upgrade it to something better but don’t go wireless when you have perfectly good wires there.

I'm with Iamchamps, you already have the wires so why not just replace it with a wired system?

With a wireless you'll have batteries to replace every few years.

There several reasons why I want new system

• I need additional sensors , so more wires , more work
• Need to move current sensors to new locations
• Old installers want £60 callout before they even start work.
• Wireless surely gives more flexibility?

Are you moving all the sensors or just some of them?
If you're redecorating then potentially could you run new cables?

You can get hybrid wired and wireless systems.

You don't necessarily need someone to install it for you, I installed a wired Texecom alarm myself without having any prior experience of installing an alarm.

Wireless may give greater flexibility in certain circumstances, but normally cost more than a wired.

I would keep it, fit an hybrid system like a texecom , you can at least have a wired bell , keypad , landing detector, the wireless versions have 4 onboard zones at least ,plus 2 on the keypad ...

The thing is ....I can get a new system for £250 that will pretty much do all I want , and I can install it myself and fairly quickly if all the reviews are to be believed.
Plus, all the old PIR’s looks yellow and discoloured and are going to really stand out when I redecorate. The system is pretty old.
How much do you think it will cost to replace all PIR’s, route to and fit new ones, and service the unit? £300,£400. Plus all the inconvenience of pulling up carpets ,etc.
I also get all the benefits of controlling it with my phone. I understand the pro’s for keeping it , but for me it’s a no brainer.
So, can I just take out the fuse from the isolator and discard the old white box ?

How many PIRs do you need? Wired PIRs are pretty cheap.
You already have existing wiring that you could potentially make use of.

It's up to you, your house and your money, but having had a wireless yale before and my current one it's a no contest for me.

Yes you can, but expect the bellbox to go off the moment you disconnect power from the white box (and remove its battery), the bellbox has its own standby battery.

Wireless should be the last option as wireless communications have always been susceptible to blocking by transmissions from other equipment which prevent the system operating properly if at all.. The few frequencies allocated for Licence Exempt operation are becoming used by more and more equipment meaning blocking is an increasing problem.

There is also malicious blocking ( jamming ) which is intended to disabled the alarm or to create so many false alarms that the user no longer has confidence in the system

Will it do what you need it to do?

does your current alarm system work? if yes then its probably better keeping what you have than swapping for Yale, I am guessing your looking at bottom end yale at that.

Don’t go fitting a Yale, it’s cheap for a reason. As others have said, get a new professional hybrid system, use all the cables you can, fit new hardwired PIRs, Keypad & Siren. Then add wireless PIRs for the rooms you are changing. The Texecom system as previously recommended has a free app too. You’ll also get loads of support on here. Just don’t fit the Yale and if you do, keep the cables & tuck them behind the new kit so that if you change your mind in the future you can retrieve the cables, wireless alarms of all brands are not without issues relating to weak signals & interference from the environment in which they are fitted.

Personally I'd also install a hybrid system using the exisiting cabling where possible. A Texecom can have wireless expanders which lets you use wired/ wireless and is a professional piece of kit with a small amount of complaints.

With an alarm you get what you pay for, and for something that will potentially last 10+ years I'd rather pay a bit more on something I have confidence in.
