Hi
I have renault clio 2002 and having some probelm with car starting since last two weeks. It occurs only in morning for first time start. The battery is in good condition as per recent battery check report.

Kwik-fit mechanic can't see any probelm with the engine that can cause this but it is happen quite often now.

It usually takes 2 to 5 attempt to start the car.

Any suggestion please. :(

The people who work in quick fit are tyre fitters not mechanics so no surprise they couldn't find the fault.

When you say the battery was tested was it a drop test or just a simple check with a multimeter? If the voltage drops too much during a large current draw (starting) then it is knackered even if it shows 12V with a meter.

Does the starter run freeley but the engine just fails to fire, does it sounded larboured or struggling? When was the car last serviced and specifically when were the plugs changed?

Dear iwaters

the Battery was checked only with multimeter. The starter runs freeley and as you mention the engine fails to fire. It sounds like struggling. The car was last serviced in January this year and the plugs were changed that time. I am due for new service in June.

Thanks for your reply and help with this matter.

Do you have another car and a set of jump leads? You could try jump starting it and see if that works - cheaper than paying for a battery drop test. Also check the earth wire is free from corroision and attached to the bodywork properly. Inspect the wire going from the battery to the starter and make sure this isn't loose.

If the battery is ok then the problem is either with the delivery of the spark to the cylinders or delivery of fuel. You need to test for both. A garage will be able to check the fuel pressure at the injectors and test for a spark at each cylinder. Once you have found which of those has a problem you can track down the reason.

The garage should also probably do a fault code scan as it could be a faulty cranskhsaft sensor or something else which may have logged a fault.

I have also done a quick google to see if there is anything specific with your car and some people have reported starting problems because the battery in the key fob is low. Apparently it has enough power to unlock the doors but not disable the immobilizer. Sounds a bit odd but is only going to cost a couple of quid.
