Hi I wonder if you can help me.last week my aux belt frayed and I changed it ok. Today went to start van and would turn over a bit then stop. Thought battery was dead bumped started it an now a knocking noise from engine
I think timing has jumped as in amongst timing belt are strands of aux belt wrapped around pulleys. I havelooked at timing belt and think the markings don't line up.
Could someone show where pulley marks should be. I can see the camshaft marks but not sure of crankshaft. And is there a mark for diesel pump. Many thanks for this help pete

Is this your setup?

If its noisy, sorry to say its there until you strip it down. Re-timing will not rectify it, unless you are extremely lucky and it was only the pump that jumped. If the camshaft jumped the harm will be already done.

Yes it's that set up I can see cam marking. I havetaken crankshaft pulley off but not sure of markings. Is there a mark for pump as well thanks for your help

I cant remember, but from the above diagram the pump seems to be timed to a line on the belt, can you see it?

No I can't see any markings I am going to get a new belt Monday. If I put the newbelt on and is still the same will it cause any more damage. The van drives the same. As before but just a little louder though thanks pete

No extra harm as long as you double check ALL the marks after turning the engine at least 2 full clockwise revolutions.

Do Not just put the belt on and hope for the best, or you will do more harm.

Study the diagram. if in doubt get someone to double check it for you.

Good Luck

On the F8Q engine, the injector pump is set to 3 oclock, and the camshaft pulley to 12 oclock......you get that approximately correct and then go for the markings on the belt. Often enough theres a corresponding mark on the belt inner cover too. Observe the belts direction of rotation - clockwise!
These date from when timing belt markings were sensible.....don't try the 1.5 dci then :p
John :)
