Renault Megane coupe Cam Belt has gone bye bye!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for reading.

My better half has a ten year Megane Coupe 1.6 16v. It has got about 150k miles on it and it still a good motor.

Today the car broke down and it seems like the Cam belt has gone. I have not looked into the extent of the damage yet and this is what I want help with.

Has anyone else experianced this before? Is it worth stripping the head off and looking at the valves?? Whats the likely hood that the valves have been smashed?

Ive already priced up the valves and they are about £10 each.

Any tips here please??

Forgot to mention that im toying with the idea of putting another engine in here!!!!!!

There is a very good chance that the pistons and valves have come together as this is an 'interference' engine. However, it has to be worth while putting a new belt on and having a compression test done.
At that sort of mileage, is it really worth spending money on? You might like to check out Renault specialist breakers for another motor - but the immobiliser system must come with it!

No it does not. The immobiliser is part of the ECU which is fitted inside the car.

As for replacing the vales. Be carefull as several things may have happened. A: Valve guides may be cracked and need expensive replacement B: Piston rings may get pinched in groves causing engine to heavily burn oil after rebuild.

Better off buying a second hand engine, just make sure you fit a new cam belt kit including water pump (if belt driven) before fitting engine.

Yes, scrap it. It's beyond economic repair.

Happened to me twice.

I scrapped it the 2nd time.

Its now in 2 boxes in my cellar, stripped for useless parts I'll never use on the current version

If you can get another engine yourself & replace it yourself then its far cheaper, just do as advised & replace the belt(s) and pump etc.

Just to clear up do i need to make sure the immobiliser is complete with the engine or not? If not do i need to do anything about this or just leave it as it is?

Can anyone reccomend somewhere reputable to buy an engine from in the Yorkshire area?

I have a friend who said he would pull the old one out and fit another for £100. Ive never done a Megane engine but Ive done a few others (old minis & mk 2 fiesta) but I dont think it is even worth putting my overalls on in the cold weather for £100!!??!?

Second that, scrap it.

IF the rest of it is in good condition & you have the room you can strip it & ebay the parts to make up for some of the loss.

I put mine in the cellar, unfortunately (bloody typical I mean) the part I need now (pollen filter cover) is not amongst it.
