Render (plinth) around bottom of extension? (Ed.)

Hi everyone,

I have had an extension built at the back of our house and am about to point up the brickwork, however I am unsure how to finish the bottom of the wall.

The orginal wall has a render covering the bottom four rows of bricks. Should I continue this around the new brickwork too? I’ve read online and have found various suggestions of applying new render or removing the whole lot from the orginal brickwork and just pointing all of the brickwork up.

I’ve added a photo to show where the new and old brickwork meets to illustrate what I’m talking about.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It'll be a long hard slog removing the old render, and you might end up with damaged bricks in the process.
I'd say you have two choices, render up to below the DPC on the new brickwork, (Don't bridge the DPC) or leave it as is.

Presumably, the new DPC is in line with the old DPC?
Any signs of damp in the old property?
At the moment your old DPC is bridged, & its almost in ground contact - why not remove the plinth for about 600mm, & see how you get on?
If necessary, Its no big deal "to put it back". If no dramas then remove the whole house plinth.

Is the new DPC set at some random height? It has not been bedded in mortar and is sticking past the brickwork face. Rough as a horses arse.

Would trimming the DPC back slightly and pointing with sand and cement be a solution?

No signs of damp in the house that I can see. If no dramas remove the whole lot and repoint it all with sand and cement?
