Rendering over existing render

Hallo I am definitely a Newbie - this being my first post on any forum of any description.
I have tried to find the answer this but without any success.
Is it possible to render over existing external render if the existing render is sound?
My house is already rendered but it's an uneven finish and the paint on it is peeling off. I want to re-render to achieve flat finish and then paint it.
I have had a builder look at the job and he says in my case it would be ok to leave existing render alone. I have seen some of his other work and it looks good but I just want a second (unbiased) opinion.

yes you can render over render with the proper preparation!
making sure the new render will not impede on the windows or door openings.

Thanks for quick reply! regarding windows and doors I have raised this issue with the builder and he has advised he will hack off old render at the recesses so it doesn't impede.
