I rendered a step (1 of 2) last weekend and were wanting to paint it, however the finish isn’t as smooth as we’d hoped even though using plastering/rendering sand. I used a 4:1 mix.

I’ve sampled some ‘external’ filler which I really didn’t like and removing it ha take a fair hit of material with it.

So my question is, if I seal the render with PVA, can I use a normal filler and paint over it? I’m wanting a smooth line with the slab on top.

Many thanks

Now then Onionsa, seal it with sbr everbuild bond. Then using a fairly thick rendermix blend into your upstand using a trowel and straight edge for the top. To get the really smooth finish keep trowel clean and brush the render with water and smooth off. Let it dry reseal it with the same bond and paint over using a floor paint for maximum protection.
