rendering

hey guys,
i am about to attempt rendering the front of my house and need some advice please.
i have done a bit of plastering in the past and think it might be similar to rendering, but i am not sure of a cple of things,

is render just another name for cement??
what sort of mix do i need??
do i have to use the edging strips similar to those used in plastering??
are they the same as those used in plastering??
how do i fix them??
