Hi all, we're getting our windows replaced and wondering what to do about the tiled sills below the windows. Some are not in great condition and also worried they will be dislodged by the window fitters but they themselves say they cannot renew or replace them. What trade would be best to fix/renew and paint? Thanks for the help

Can't they just remove the tiles and install upvc window sills? That's what I did when I replaced my old windows similar to yours.

I can maybe ask. I asked about renovating the tiles but they said that wasn't their thing. I think the pvc windows come with mini sills/lip built in? But would need a deeper one to go below if the tiles came out. To be honest I don't mind them but they do need some maintenance now and again. Guess uPVC would be less hassle.

But the first picture already shows the window has a brown woodgrain cill so the new windows will have that too but the tiled cill below that id say isn't even part of the window, very weird set up. Can you take a picture from the side showing how far back the window is set back in the reveal and how much the tiled cill sticks out.

I'd say the easiest way was to cut the tiled overhang back a little and cloak them with cappit board

It varies by window but the windows are recessed back in the reveal from 70-110mm and the tiles protrude about the same amount beyond the wall. I guess they are performing the purpose of a cill to protect the lower reveal and wall from water

Is this an ex local authority house? Where is the internal cill in relation to the outer, is it higher like maybe a course of bricks maybe two? In the past what we were doing is removing a course of bricks or two inside to bring the inner level to the same as the outer, removing the tiled cill and measuring the new window to sit lower down and fitting an extended cill, either a 180mm or even 225mm and then removing internal bricks and have a heap of making good to do inside, another option and perhaps the least disruptive is leave the window size as it is and remove the tiles and lay 2 courses of bricks in their place and render and pebbledash over but you'll never get a perfect match, if you can live with that then thats the easier route but that will be an extra cost as whilst the tiles are acting as a cill I don't believe they are part of the window itself

Yes you may be right, the internal sill looks a bit higher so maybe thats possible that there is one row of bricks lower on the outside. As you say dropping the window seems like a lot of work. Surely the tiles could just be removed and something equivalent put in or maybe replaced with something like a conglomerate window sill. A continuous piece rather than separate tiles would make sense to me of can be cut to size. https://www.shop24glasgow.co.uk/en/...cv.html#/115-conglomerate-carrera_micro_white

But who would you employ to do this and should it come before or after the windows or doesn't matter? I would have thought taking out the windows may damage the tiles so after might make sense.

After or at the same time, I suggested cappit board but thats just a name we use but its anything like this...

Ok thanks for your suggestions. Based on what you said it would be something like the image below? Assuming the tiles had been cut back a bit then the capping put on with the lip of it to cover the open end of the tiles? Ideally the lip would cover the whole open end of the two layers of tiles? Secured with a sealant

Sorry got one more question. I think the uPVC windows will come with a stub sill 95mm? Similar I assume to what the old windows have. There's no logic in having a longer sill fitted 150 or 180mm? Then the tiles could be removed. This would leave a gap from the ledge/reveal up to the underside of the sill but could this be then levelled off/filled in with something so it looks 'normal' image below tries to show what I mean, right is current situation or new windows with stub sill Vs left, longer sill with tiles removed then gap filled.
