renovating sashes

Hi, I have three wooden sash windows in my 1st floor front room, all about 1 m wide and 2m high. They badly need renovating, paint is peeling and cracking, there are gaps, they rattle, sashes broken, boxes not in good condition etc.

I would rather renovate than replace. not bothered about replacing them with double glased glass, and would quite like to keep the original glass as it's very old and you can see bubbles etc in them (which I like).

Can anyone give me a rough figure to how much this would cost to do, and if I would need a carpenter or a specialist sash window person. I'm in East London?

Really want to get it done this summer as don't want them to deteriate further. The street is full of UPVC as is the rest of my flat, so I don't want ot lose these ones.

Without looking at the windows it's impossible to say how much it would cost but I've repaired some in very bad states so nothing is impossible.

They also have their own system of brushes and fixing which leave you with a draught free window that comes apart easily for painting and maintance.

Hi thanks for your reply. I know that it can cost from £700 to £1000 each if I replaced them,so was hoping renovation would be cheaper.

Think about double glazing, the chances are renovation may break the existing glass .

Yes it's true glass can often be the most expensive part of the renovation. I worked on the renovation of Monmouth Town hall last year , listed of course, and the glass was "special" 2mm thick glass made in Poland . It was essentially made how glass used to be made here many years ago, but the price was something like £400 a square metre
