Hi

I've inherited an old stone statue that was last painted a good 20 years ago. As you would expect the paint is flaking (more so in some areas than others) and I would like to repaint it.

What is the best way to remove the flaking paint?

As it is flaking more so in some areas there are some raised areas where 4 or 5 coats of paint are still attached next to an area where all the paint has flaked off - this leaves a noticeable difference which I can't paint over.

Any ideas? I've never painted or worked with stone before.

Cheers

With out looking at the statue, my best advice would be as follows...

Pressure wash it, then wire brush it, then pressure wash again.
Repeat until you have removed all of the paint

depends on the type of paint on it, but if your looking for a stone type colour then you could "paint it with a cement wash" that will give it a natural look once its weathered.

Just curious decorator types.... can this not be burnt off?

Risky..

If its water based it wont have it..and if theres any air porckets in the stones they will blow badly, possibly causing a lot of damage
