Under my kitchen sink, about 2 inches past the stopcock, the guy who used to own my house had the wisdom  to install a cheap & nasty cartridge-type water softener, using one of those fittings that just drill into the copper pipe and then seal themselves.

I've now removed most of the kit and the daft tap that used to be alongside the sink. But I'm stuck on how to remove the fitting on the rising main - currently I've left it in place and I've just clamped the original flexible tube coming from it.

Obviously this needs a more permanent solution - but what can I use to seal a small hole in a copper pipe carrying full mains pressure? The length of pipe concerned is only about 1.5 inches long.

I'm not enough of a plumber to replace the pipe section and the fittings around it  - so what I'm really after is a quick off-the-shelf solution. Is there such a thing?

Cheers

you can get a rubber lined clamp
never used one but allegedly they work
if the pipe is that small bite the bullet and replace it if you get stuck post :D

Thanks kev

Took your advice and did the job properly.
Well ok - I used one of those push-fit connectors  - but it's a neat enough job and doesn't leak :D
Restored earth continuity, so it's all fine.

Cheers
