Replace bath tap - with pictures ???

Hi there,

I need to replace this broken bath cold water tap. I will have to replace the hot tap too as I can't get an identical replacement cold tap.

Questions:

0. What size spanner / wrench do I need as the one I have is too small for this job; the black nut is larger than the brass coloured one.

1. Do I undo the brass coloured nut to release the tap tail from the feed pipe?

2. Then undo the black plastic nut under the rim of the bath to release the tap itself?

3. Is this a compression joint with an olive or just a screw on joint?

4. To fit the new tap, is this just a reversal of the above?

5. Do I need to use some wraps of PTFE tape?

1 st step is to isolate the supplies and open the taps to relive pressure.

I don't know the exact size of the tap connector but i think the back nut is 32mm. I use a wide jaw adjustable spanner on the tap connector and on the tap back nut. you could also use adjustable wrench, or you could got to your local DIY shop and ask for a tap spanner.

Looking at the pic's those tap connectors have a fibre washer. this will likely need to be replaced like for like or you could try ptfe on the rib to form a washer?(personally i find this ok but if its your first time, you have to be careful when re-turning the supply as it may leak alot if not done correctly).

A basin wrench should fit the nuts,

Or an adjustable spanner (which has many other uses too). Access looks reasonably straightforward, so I would go for a 10" / 250mm adjustable myself. Basin wrenches are useful when access is restricted.

The brass nut is the tap connector. that releases the pipe from the tap tail.

The plastic backnut clamps the tap to the tub.

The tap connector has a fibre washer to seal against the end of the tap tail. New washers should only cost pennies.

Many like to fit 'top hat' washers under the backnuts.

They can help make a firm fixing, and make the nut more accessible to clamp everything up tight.

No need for PTFE tape on the threads. it serves no purpose there.

I usually soften the fibre washer a bit by soaking it in water for about a minute before assembling the tap connector.

Hello again,

Just purchased a brand new pair of Bristan bath taps, which I want to fit tomorrow. I will include a Top Hat washer, which I purchased from Screwfix; same as shown in TicklyT's post. Which way round does the washer go, does the square flat side sit against the underneath of the bath or is it the other way round?
