I have some tiles that are cut to size and mortared under the hip tiles. The problem is a few of them have broken and I am not sure how I can get them out and place new ones. Can someone advise.

You will need to remove the hip tiles to do so. May be best with a grinder and target the mortar rather than just using a hammer to loosen them as you may add to the broken pile rather quickly.

Its a similar issue to vertical tile hanging, in that you need to remove the tile above, in order to access the problem tile, and so on. The hips will be secured with a chunky nail, that may or may not want to come out. The cut tiles will likely be reduced to a single nib and a single fixing, hence the fact that some have failed.
Needs some skill and a deft hand with an angle grinder.
