Now the carpet is off my staircase they are looking to be in really bad condition. The risers are really split and cracked but I guess that’s to be expected from 1970’s.

Rather than repair, would you recommend simply putting a new staircase in? My joiner would do this in a day rather than me.

A local timber merchant have 3 premade sizes (all MDF and all around £180) My joiner seems to think that I need the post at the end building into the premade staircase. The price seems great. There’ll be extra costs to add on for the banister, spindles etc?

Is it best to go to somewhere like stairbox instead so the end post is built in etc? Or is it easy enough to find one bought seperatly?

As I’ve not budgeted for this I want to try to do it for the best price possible so your help is greatly appreciate pls.

Please could you advise.

Thanks.

You could clad the existing newel post.

For £180 you'll be getting new treads/ risers not a new staircase.

Thanks that makes sense. So if the current staircase is removed (treads and risers) I may as well remove the newel post too - as the new case will actually finish slightly small on the overall run/going.

Is it the possible to add a new newel to the new staircase once it’s in position?

You'd be adding treads and risers on top of the existing (which has its own implications); it's not practical to remove the originals as they will be fixed into grooves or "housings" on the staircase frame or "stringer" itself, that's the part on the wall side.

The newel post can be replaced but the suggestion of cladding was to complement the "cladding" of the new treads and risers.

The alternatives are a complete new staircase or refurbishing the existing.

Thanks. Perhaps I need to clarify...

The £180 I was mentioning was a complete new staircase in MDF. I phoned my local timber merchant and they said they had three sizes on stock that the get from a local joiner. The one that best suits mine is...

2574 total rise
2676 total run/going

I assume this will be a price is for what can be seen in the attached photos (minus the newel).

As the staircase is in such bad condition and would need a lot of replacement treads/risers (but as you said this is difficult as they will be joined into the housing/stringers - good point) and a lot of sanding or cladding for the other parts, it seems logical to spend £180 to replace the guts of it at this point.

Repaired mine with thin mdf glued to step and riser , had little effect on carpet fitting.

I doubt the cost would be for a complete new staircase, the structural parts of which would have to be in timber, more likely for cladding the existing. The issue would be the consequential reduction of the size of the treads and risers

you can get the full staircase from around £350 inc newals, spindles and handrails from e-bay.
