Replacement RCD to fit Proteus

Hello All,

I need to replace a 'non working' rcd unit in a C/U.

It is a 2 Pole Proteus 63A/30m/a rcd which takes up 4 modules in the C/U.
These are not sold anymore, but wondered if any of you helpful souls here knew of another brand which would fit ???
Having said that, I believe it not good practice to fit different 'brands' of components into C/U's ? Could I change the rcd/busbar/mcb's complete (leaving the non rcd circuits alone) ???

To be honest I thought I would be able to get hold of one of these units and my price reflected this

Thank you for any help or advice.

Ed.

some Proteus look like (?are?) Wylex - can you post a pic of the CU, open and closed, someone will recognise the model.

Proteus is CEF's own brand

have you tried them?

ED what's your location as I have a CEF 1/2 mile from me, I don't have an account with them so price could be anything.

But if you're really stuck I might be able to help.

Thanks JD. (Mr RCBO), DESL,
I shall get a picture when I start the job and post here. I was just looking on the proteus site and wondered if a 'standard' 2 pole, 2 module rcd would fit !! ???
I have a CEF local to me, I will give them a visit, although the guys at my local Newlec seemed to think they were impossible to get hold of, and this was confirmed by my call to Proteus.

Thanks again

CEF also sell cheaper "M2" stuff, (a brand of proteus, a brand of CEF) and their design is pretty much exactly the same as proteus and as JohnD says, wylex (allthough they are owned by electrium as are crabtree and volex)

Whether you can fit a 2 module device in place of a 4 will depend upon whether you have a standard din rail behind it and whether the tails connected to it are flexible or rigid.

Not sure about Proteus, but if they're based on Wylex (some were), they may well have no din rail & rigid tails.

Post a piccy of the CU naked.

Firstly, I would like to thank you all, for your advice and help here.

I called the customer and popped around.
He seemed a little wary as I said I wanted a piccy and disappeared into his garage, after fumbling with my phone cam , the existing fluorescent, and my torch I only managed these pics. ( I had to leave when he opened the door to find me in a dark room fumbling with my phone.)

Can someone advise me on mixing 'brands' within a consumer unit too please, are 'values' and 'ratings' a standard , or I am right it thinking it is not advisable.

Many Thanks.

Ed.

That looks like Lucy Zara. Until my mum moved 6 months ago, she was her next-door neighbour.

Sorry, the last picture was supposed to 'ease' the tension ! Not to divert from my questions ?

Do my 'pants' pictures shed any light please ?

And the mixed 'brand' thing ??

Sorry to be so persistent.
Ed

From what I can gather CU's are type tested to enable them to comply with BS(whatever), they will do this using components from their own range; so if you use a different manufacturers MCB/RCD/RCBO then that CU will no longer comply as it hasn't been tested for use with those specific components. Not that I haven't seen it done (or even done it myself on an older board at a push)

The old Proteus CBs have the busbar clamped under the screw at the front and from your picture the busbar is cranked back to go into the rcd.

I've had a look at a proteus that i have here against a couple of main switches from other makers (will have the same pitch as the RCD).

The Wylex terminals are set quite a way back, MEM is even worse but the MK looks like it might do the trick.
Best is to take the busbar and the cb along to a friendly disty and see what works. Otherwise you could butcher the busbar so it fits or run a short length of 16mm from the busbar into the new RCD.

Many Thanks All.
Job should start next week so I will 'eep you posted' .
