Hi,

I've just bought a property where the heating and hot water timer is bust. How easy are these things to replace? It is possible for an absolute novice to change it, or is it a case of getting someone in?

Cheers

You may be able to get a replacement timer which mounts on to the existing backplate but if it is too old this may not be possible. Most timeclock arrangements are similar in the wiring but if you are not confident doing this job which may entail a complete backplate change to a different style of timer and you are unsure what is wired to what then leave it to a professional . Too easy to be confused and make a mistake if you are unsure, take its details to a supplier and ask, they will help with obtaining a suitable replacement.

You can just get a new Switchmaster timer and put it on the same backplate - (I've got lots I sell for a tenner if you want a standard 24 hour type).
If you want a more technofmological type you just have to put a new backplate on the wall and connect the wires. Not as hard as it might sound when you have a bunch of heating bods handy who can tell you which wire goes where!
First find the model number of the old timer.

Thanks for this - Makes sense to put a new one on there, the old one looks pretty outdated. If it's a case of figuring one which wire goes where I'll give it a bash of fitting a new one. Any recommendations for brands/type etc?

Will need one that can run the hot water and heating separately, and standard 24 hour once/twice/constant/off options as a minimum.

Cheers
