I am trying to replace a switch that controls an outside light. I didn't instal the switch. What it does is simply turn the light on and off. There are no other switches that control this light.
However, I find that the switch looks exactly like an intermediate switch. It has 4 connections, a red and a black at each end.
The switch I want to put in its place is a 2-way switch but can be used as one way - they only come as 2-way. How can I connect this switch?

depends what markings your new switch has.

try C and L1 (one red in each, or if you only have one red and one black it does not matter)

The new switch has numbers 2 and 3 at the top and 1 at the bottom. There is a little diagram with 1 linked to 2 with a dotted line and 1 linked to 3 with a solid line. If it helps at all it is branded "Wandsworth".

The intermediate switch has 2 reds and 2 blacks. One end of the switch is marked LOAD and has a red going into L and black going into N. The other end is unmarked but also has red going into L and black going into N.

To follow your suggestion, which red or which black should I use, and what should I do with the other red and/or black?

Thank you, by the way, for sending your reply on Boxing Day. Much appreciated.

connect the two blacks together (in connector block) and put one red in 1 and the other in 3. incidentaly the switch is upside down, 1 should be at the top.

just out of interest why are you changing the switch?, no electrical reason is there? or does it not now match the decor?
