replacing and locating toilet cistern washer

i have a toilet that is constantly dripping from the overflow, a friend tells me i need to replace the washer but being a total novice i cant locate it...help..

Your friend is almost certainly correct, but the method of replacement depends on the type of valve you have.

Can you remove the cistern lid?

Can you describe what's inside, or, better still, post a photo of it here?
