I would like to replace the x3 4 inch butt hinges on our hardwood front door for new ones. The only reason for the change is an aesthetic one.

However, all the hinges I can find on the market have screw holes which are fractionally misaligned to those of the existing hinges.

What is the solution in this scenario? Should I plug the existing holes in the door lining and door with small timber dowels and pva and then screw the hinges on? Or am I likely to severely weaken the load the screws can take and the only option would be to lower or heighten the hinge positions?

Plug the holes as you suggest, (hammer the plugs in firmly then trim them off with a chisel) then use a really fine pilot drill dead centre of the new hinge holes to assist the new screws.
The hinge rebate will support the door.

well i wouldnt make the holes any bigger to put dowels in,use matches/cocktail sticks etc with pva and hammer these in,that way you dont take the strength of the door frame away too much.
