Hi - having trouble finding a definitive answer to this one.

We are about to buy a house and have noticed that that a couple of first floor side windows are going to need replacing soon. The house is about 100 years old and the windows are ancient. The glass in the windows is clear and they only look on to the windowless elevation of the neighbours house about 20ft away (they don't look into their garden). I've read in a couple of places that when replacing existing side windows on the first floor, opaque glass must be used. As this is intended to be a bedroom opaque glass is just not an option. Worried now as this could be a deal breaker in the house purchase. Any comments/experience/observations would be appreciated.

Will check with local authority about planning as well.

Ta in advance.

I've just had 3 replaced in the side elevation of my house in a similar position and had clear glass no problems at all.

If you are replacing like for like then it should not be a problem at all.

Thanks for the replies. I did give the local authority a ring in the end and you were dead right - it only applies to new openings so our house purchase is safely on track. Many thanks for your time.
