There is a thermostat downstairs, and another one (of the same design as shown - a satchwell TL type) upstairs. There's an electronic valve thing downstairs and another upstairs.
The boiler also appears to he connected to a timer switch (photo) and also has a temperature dial (other photo)
Advice on what kind of thermostat would work would be gratefully received! Thanks for the replies so far
Are there three or four water pipes connected to the boiler? Can you have the heating on without the hot water?
If so, you have a pumped heating, gravity hot water system, which was quite common when Kingfishers were being installed. (I had the same 20 years ago.) If you have gravity HW, the temperature dial in your last pic controls the water temperature in the HW cylinder

Do the valves look something like this? If so they are zone valves. They control the flow of water through the radiators and are opened/closed by the relevant thermostat. They also start/stop the boiler.
