Hi, we have discussed CWI in order to keep original sash windows which are not secondary glazed. However, cannot have CWI as debris has gone in the cavity and it would more than likely breach the natural dpc of this Akrington brick-built house. Ventrolla have quoted £12k just to overhaul the windows without putting secondary glazing in. A quote for replacing the windows with UPVC like for like double glazing would cost, in white, £9k (23 frames). The original windows are amazing with stain glass features, lead bits and wood that you can't get now. They have been spliced in the past and look good but we want to live here for the next 30 years, bring up the kids here etc. Anyone had any experience of living with these types of windows? If so, how did you get on? Who would keep and why? Who would replace and why? Any comments much appreciated. It is a big house..... totally new boiler with very efficient rads and we are having wood burning stoves in the dining room and living room...

Keep the existing windows

There are alternative systems for draughtproofing sash windows than ventrolla, some of which are DIYable or any competent joiner.

If you get plastic windows you will spend £9k, probably knock twice that off the value of your house, and probably have to replace them in 30 years anyway. And you will have bad karma.

A judicious mix of draughtproofing, secondary glazing (eg on biggest windows facing the road), thick curtains, and in rooms like bathroom consider internal wall cladding to reduce condensation.
