I wonder if anyone could give me an idea of how much it would have cost to have done the job I have just completed? I became sick to death of people suggesting I paid someone to do it instead! It would be nice to have an idea of what I've saved!

I had to replace the mains water supply to my house; it was leaking like mad under an extension the previous owner put up and, I subsequently found out, was lead anyway.

Replacement (and re-routing) included digging down the statutory 2.5 feet under the narrow path next to the kitchen. Fortunately there was block paving which came up easily but I still, predictably, had to dig through rubble in a confined space. The trench had to be 30 metres long and ended up at my boundary 7.5 feet down; the pavement being 5 feet lower than my garden. I demolished the retaining stone wall; later reinstating it. On the way I found the original concrete steps the previous owner had covered up. I also avoided a tree in the way (not easy). What else? Oh, of course I had to dig up the kitchen floor to get the blue pipe into the house. That wasn't easy either! Neither was getting under the foundations.

I think that's everything! Any idea what that little lot would have cost would be greatly appreciated!

i would have charged you £4500, there you go, you have just saved £4500 less your material cost :D
realistically you know what you paid for material and how long it took but not sure you can work out how much you really saved, it depends on a couple of things, how much I would have paid for material plus 20-30% to you and how long i would have taken @ £30 per hour.

Thanks for that. That's actually what I thought it might have been!

Bearing in mind I do a different sort of work usually, you'd be amazed at the number of people passing by that say "Oooooooh, haven't you finished that yet." etc etc. Or maybe you wouldn't be surprised! Really, most of the work done (not all the reinstatement though) in 2.5 weeks is not bad at all for after work / weekends I'd have thought!

Thanks again; I feel a lot better now!

You have saved yourself the price of a Caribbean holiday for 2 and got some good exercise that will benefit your health in to the bargain. ;)
Well done.

Thanks for that! It's so nice to get encouragement. I actually quite enjoy doing all this; I feel I know the house even more intimately now.

£4.5k  Why pay a fully qualified Gas Expert to do digging ;) Even in Surrey you could take £1.5k off that  But , Fair Play to you - you still saved a packet @ realistic prices
