Replacing upstairs pipework

Hi

I am shortly going to be replacing my upstairs heating pipework and TRV's.

Obviously I need to drain the system first.

I will be doing this over a few evenings and so that I can continue to have hot water from the combi do I just cap the flow and return pipes where they start upstairs?

Would it not be difficult to re-pressurise the system if these pipes are capped?

The combi is downstairs

1. You only need to drain the system down to the level of the upstairs floor.
2. Yes, just cap the flow and return at the level to which you have drained down.
3. It should be no more difficult to re-pressurise than with a full system.

How do I know when I've drained the system enough?

I assumed that once the two pipes are capped that any air would be hard to purge?
