Hi all,

I am looking to get my bathrooms re-done in our flat. All of the walls are plasterboard and at present only the shower unit has tiles. The shower unit is leaking so water is getting through which is causing mold on the side wall (there is a sort of box unit which hides all of the pipes so this box unit will also need to be made again). I suspect that the wall which makes up the shower unit will need to be replace entirely, the plan is to tile the whole of the other walls on the existing plasterboards (which are in good shape).

Once we remove the old shower tiles would it be best to change the plasterboard which is under the tiles? I think removing the files may damage the existing wall, also if water is leaking then it may be damaged and need replacing anyway.

What material should I use to replace this wall? Should I use plasterboard or can I use any other type of material? The wall will be covered with tiles so I am not sure if I can introduce any other type of wall material other then plasterboard?

I was also wondering what the best option would be to introduce a waterproof layer between the wall and the tiles? Should I put something between the wall and tiles to make it more waterproof?

There's masses of recent threads on this subject - why not research them - starting with Similar Threads below?
In the meantime, after exposing studs or walls why not post pics of the bathroom?

Having lived in a house where the tiled shower wall collapsed whilst the shower was in use (and the then girlfriend nearly had her legs shredded when it went) Replace the Plasterboard

Once you have done that use something like Formuica Shower panelling or BushBoard Nuance panels to line the shower area.
