I had two people come over to quote for a replastering job. The existing walls are lath and plaster and it's cracking in places. One plasterer said to remove and re-plasterboard the walls and overboard the ceiling.

The second person also mentioned bonding fiberglass mesh sheet over the existing lath and plaster walls ans skim over it. He thought the mesh will prevent cracks re-appearing.

Mesh and skim seems less labour intensive but is it likly to work? TIA.

Hi
Re mesh.
Depends how solid walls are. I used to drill holes along loose areas and inject with foam to firm up as the foam will stick to laths, then mesh and skim.
To test.
If you push walls on bad cracks, can you hear crunching and some movement that seems like it's a problem.
If so then remove wall, board and skim.
Mesh works but long term not worth plastering if wall is failing.

There is no skill involved in removing a wall and its a easy job to board.
Consider at least removing wall yourself to save money if you're able.
Just messy so corex boards and traps on floor.
Quality dust mask and PPE.
Rubble sacks
Skip.

I removed the lath and plaster from this side of the partition a while ago. I removed it because of the cracked in the lath and plaster that formed where the wood frame and brickwork met. It was a big job for me but not impossible. The plan is to board and skim this side.

The lath and plaster on the other side of this partition look and feels stable excepts when I press the circled area at the other side of the partition where there is a thin crack. It looks like there is less plaster bonding the laths in that area. Is it worth using an adhesive, such as expandable foam to stabilise that area and then mesh and skim?
