I need to do some minor repointing on my house around the foundations where original mortar is crumbling. The joins are 5mm wide (and narrower in places). I was going to use a mortar gun and lime mortar. I've also found that the closest colour colour match for original mortar is actually play sand (which is just about the only silver sand stocked locally).
Is it possible to use mortar gun with such narrow joins. Also, is there any problems with using fine silver sand for lime mortar (1:3 mix hydraulic lime to sand) - I believe ideally I wouldn't be using such a fine sand but its a perfect colour match.
