repointing garden wall- should i chase out both sides first?

Hi all,

New here so apologies if this is a silly question. I've looked in lots of places and cant find the answer

I am having a garden wall repointed and I am considering raking out the joints myself to keep the labour costs down.

Is it ok to rake out all the joints on both sides prior to starting the repointing, (the wall needs repointing on both sides). Or would you normally do one side at a time?

Any advice welcomed.

if its a 4 inch wall raking 20mm out of each side will leave it pretty unstable.

On a 9inch wall go nuts

+1 - Hate to say it as a Brickie, but this is well within your capabilities, DIY. But a 4inch wall could also easily absorb the hacking out on both sides to 20mm.
