Repointing guns

I'm currently patching in the pointing on a red brick property - the pointing in areas has deteriorated.
Has anyone experience with the various pointing guns that are now on the market? Are they any better than the usual pointing-trowel method?

I've used a pointing gun, for about 3 minutes. got it from screw fix.

All that happened was all the water fell out and then nothing else came out as it was to dry a mix.
