Dont know of one. How about a site where you can report non paying or awkward customers, few names i could send in :(

I agree, it works both ways, but I am one of those people that paid...silly cow that i am, becasue I paid upfront....trusting little devil!!!! Maybe a site that highlights both sides????

You would have to consider the libel implications of naming individuals. :(

Not really a good idea as you could end up with a writ. ;)

I'm on there Craig, good guy I hasten to add.

OP I can never understand why anyone would be foolish enough to pay up front.

I don't usually even ask for a deposit unless the job is really big, then I only ask for a cheque to cover materials.

Well thanks guys, all your comments have been duly noted...ha ha, i will never pay up front again!!!!!!!! I think it was a girl thing and the fact that I am on my own. I have to say I had a plumber for new boilers, and he was Corgi registered, so I knew he would be trustworthy, and he gave me a list of materials, and I went to get them and paid for them.
But I will go onto the web site as i took pics. But I will say it happened twice, the first builder took me for 2.800.00 and left a great big hole in the wall, and the second one I paid 3,000.00 to finsih the job off. but ended up sacking him, becasue of the mess, and the bad workmanship. so watch the space on "nomorecowboys.com" and do you know what, let them take me to court, i dont have any more money left now, to pay any fines!!!!!

If this was a witty comment, that's ok. If you were being serious, think again. Corgi (or any other trade associated body) does not guarantee honesty, trustworthiness or any other attribute of the tradesman.

And thats where the problem lies, as some of them are so nice and friendly, have a laugh with you, and lull you into a false sense of security, you then pay them, and then the mask slips.
Unfortunately that has just happened to a neighbour of mine, but she was in the wrong in a way, by paying for the finished job without checking he did everything.
When she realised, and tried to get him back, he turned quite nasty, I asked her why on earth did you pay him?, her reply was... 'he was so nice'

Get onto the trading standards, or the VAT offices.

Let us know how you get on.

What's being nice got to do with it? I'm nice, well I like to think I am (except on forums :p ) I don't want money till I've finished. If I have doubts about what I've done, I don't want to write the invoice till I know everything's ok.

Yeah, but, not everyone is like you and me :D

We all know that when we get to the end of a job, sometimes you are so tired that your not sure if its to your satisfaction, and I have even gone in the next day, even though I have packed away, cleaned up etc, just to make sure with fresh eyes that everything is okay.
I too never accept money up front, but that easy for me, as I dont have a lot to pay out initially, but if I am on a two week job for example, I will ask the client for a draw at the end of the first week, and its only about 25% of the job.
They then pay the balance when I am finished, as I still have to buy some materials, petrol etc.

There is honest tradesmen about, but the dishonest ones makes it look bad for the honest ones.

BTW, I too have been swayed by a 'nice one' but that was a few years ago, and he was gorgeous, so you cant blame a girl for falling hook line and sinker ;)
But, its never happened since..... :p

some 12 years ago we employed a builder on our house and the work was a mess.it was supposed to be a 4 week job and we agreed he got paid at the end of every week, after the second week we sacked him, everything was skewwiff, electrical sockets, uneven concrete floor, blocked drain, gas leak, ended up paying twice to put it right..and if i was to employ another builder,i would ask him for at least 2 local references where i could go and look at his work.and if their not prepared to do that...need i say anymore.

I have been in the building trade many years and I have never understood somebody who calls himself a builder.
OK, if he employs various tradesmen, brickies, carpenters, plasterers, plumbers, etc, I can accept that is his business.
But the individual who calls himself a builder is just a jack of all trades, and more often than not a master of none
Have you ever seen carpentry work carried out by a brickie, plasterer, plumber, etc, and vica versa.
Customers should ask for proof of what apprenticeship/trainng before employing somebody to carry out work in their home.
You get what you pay for.

i partially agree with you anobium, but some builders ARE highly skilled at all three trades you mention.

would you like to see my award? ;)

you do need a lot of time in the building trade though. non stop for 26 years helps.

OK noseall, there are a few exceptions and I have met one or two.
But even the best of them in my experience will bow to somebody who just specialises in one subject.
Even one skill, woodworking for example, can cover a multitude of various specialities,
ie, carpentry, joinery, cabinet making, civil engineering, shop fitting, pattern making, etc etc.
In my time I was involved in the first 4 of the above but there is no way that I would consider my self as knowledgable,in say civil engineering,as somebody who just specialised in that all the time.
