restoring old quarry tiles

I have very old terracotta and black quarry tiles in the hall and kitchen. I really want to look after them but the black ones have lost a lot of their colour and I've had no luck asking around about how to restore them. Does anyone have any experience here, either of products which are available now, or what would have been used to colour them black originally?
