What about taking up the old floorboards in out of sight area or under the sofa and use that etc.

masonas idea is a good un ;) but watch out for leg or castor marks

other areas under the stairs in a cupboard smallest room in the house

a length or two from near the edge off the room concerned and replace the whole length with new cut to size

obviously if its tounge and groove flooring non of the abouve will be easy
as youve either got to cut the tounge and prize up gently bringing the next and the next board all up at the same time so as not to break the txg
or punch the nails through and slide the planks out

reclemation yards!!!
