I've moved into a house with parque flooring which has seen better days. See attached photos.

As a temporary solution, I'm looking to restore this to a darker shade such as rosewood or rich mahogany.

I tried sanding the floor and then applying an oil wax but this just made it sticky and hasn't really helped.

What's the best way to do this?

Having done this myself,

I did the hall (maybe 7 square metres) and it took two weekends.
I used an edge sander, plus polyurethane, and it looked ok, but was amateur.
There was dust everywhere

Later, I paid about £1100 to a guy who does it for a living.
He redid the hall, and did the through lounge. Maybe 35-40 square metres
He sanded several times, filled, stained and top coated.

Well worth it.
I know my limitations.
