Retractable Awning

My project is to install a retractable awning onto an uneven stone wall.

Would it be better to fix the metal end brackets direct to the wall or fix a length of timber to the wall and then fix brackets to that, or even justify two timber panels either end and then brackets fixed to them.

The through bolts provided are 6 x M14.
Also what type of bits should be used…..diamond tipped twist, diamond core, or TCT bits
Should hammer mode be used?
