My other half has a metal bedside lamp, that she picked up in foreign lands long ago - she's quite fond of the thing. It's got a two-prong (shaver-style) plug in an adapter, and it's not a snug fit - I'd like to put a UK plug on the cable.

It's got no earth, it's a metal lamp, and we've got an old-school CU; is there a problem with me replacing the flex and adding an earth? I'd basically drill the thing and use a screw for the wire.

It depends.

Is it Class 2 and does not require an earth?

You can still put on a British plug either way.

I'd say go for it. Check for electrical continuity between a bare metal component and the earth pin after you've done it. A serrated washer under the nut is always useful.

Good tip with the washer; I'll make sure I test it when I'm done.

I can find no marking on the lamp, so I have no idea whether it is class two. It doesn't look particularly insulated.
