Hi,

We're considering switching our stairs so that they begin in our lounge, rather than in our hallway (next to the front door) as they do at present.

The main reason for considering this is that our upstairs landing is very long and by rotating the stairs through 180 degs we might be able to gain a 4th bedroom/study (approx 10ft x 6ft). We would also create a more usable/practical understairs storage area.

The following diagram (not to any scale!) shows the current position and direction of the stairs where A is the bottom of the stairs and B is the top.

The dashed lines represent the position of the wall and door opening of the newly created 4th bedroom/study.

The other door opening/wall shown is for the main lounge (downstairs).

After "switching" the stairs, they would start in the main lounge roughly at position B, and end upstairs near position A.

One thing to consider is that our services (gas meter and elec meter) are currently in the understairs area (shown by G & E on the diagram). If we switched the stairs we would have to relocate these further along the main wall.

I appreciate the roughness of the diagram and my very basic description of what we are considering - but could anybody hazard a guess at the costs involved to carry out the above described modification(s)?

Thank you,

your door from your new room must open onto a landing of equal square size to the width of the stairs !!
