As the nights are getting darker, and will be for a few months, I plan to do some work in my little workshop, where popper is only switched on when I am using the shop.

I have a clear roof, so it allows as much daylight as possible, but we are in the UK, and darkness is something we have to live with, I have brought two clip on uk plug lights, and I was wondering if I could remove the plug and wire them into a 1 gang, 1 way switch if I wire the switch from the plug socket that would be directly next to the plug sockets, so both powered by 1 switch.

If this isn’t really something that is safe, could I instead wire both lights to one plug socket, or use a 2 gang switch?

I like these lights as I can move it to where I would need light as much as possible and I can turn one off and keep one on if needed, but if I can keep as many sockets free as possible that would be great.

i would get a individual switched 2 way extension lead , then you can control individually and just plug the 1 plug in and not have to cut off plugs and rewire etc
although that was not the question , just what i would likely do - even though i do a lot of electrics , gives more flexibility and change

Not wanting any extension leads, I am just trying to clean up some of the wires, so keeping the other sockets free, I have 7 sockets with Alexa, mitre saw and drill press taking one each. My thinking was if I put these lights on a switch, it would free up and allow me to charge the spare batteries, use a different tool, and have music going, maybe even charge my phone…

Yeah, that is what I was originally going to do, however I have a brand new light switch, with the 16mm back box and extension bits from last week as someone came to do work on my stairlift and we was going to see if he would change the light switch, but we did it ourselves and realised we had the wrong switch, and had to get another one. They wouldn’t exchange it for the right one, and only costing less than £2 we kept it.

We have had problems with our electric here since we moved in, and we have kept the back boxes that came with light switches, plug boxes etc.. so we have these, just not a 2 socket switch.

Example of problems, if we have a wired doorbell, or any kind of smart doorbell, if we flush the toilet the doorbell goes off, even the one on the other side of the house, even if all electric is off and we use a battery powered doorbell and flush it would still go off.
