Ridge tiles query

Another general question to add to my one about lead on chimneys.
Just out of curiosity, what are the bits of metal at the bottom of a run of roof ridge tiles? They stick up about 6 inch and are curled at the end

Hip irons, they help hold the ridge tiles in place.
