I am not sure if I'm posting this question in the correct category.

I've drilled 4 11mm holes for 4 M8 Rivnuts into the top inside rear corners of my VW transporter t6.1 to hold speaker pods.

My concern is the bare metal left by the drill bit. I placed masking tape around and on the drill points.

I need some sensible advice on the best way to protect the bare metal from rusting.

I've drilled into new paint as the T6.1 is only 1 year old.

I know I can brush rust inhibitor on the bare metal but which would be a good one and is there anything else I can do? Thank you

It’s Rustins for me (Toolstation), then some primer followed by a topcoat of a brushing enamel. I guess you are just drilling into a door inner skin or similar?
The bodyshell corners won’t be prone to weather anyway.

Drilling into the rear top corners of fan. When you open the tail gate looking inside van, the top corners which face inwards.
I'm sure it'll be fine. Brush some rust inhibitor on the edges of the hole then pop riv in and tighten up. That should seal it.
I read some where squirt some oil between the rivnut and panel.

Is it possible to put a little sealant in between joints?

You can seal things up if you like, personally I wouldn't bother as it's never going to rust there anyway.
I have to say though, 8mm Rivnuts are pretty big fixings for speakers!

Nice bits of kit!
I hope you can manage to compress the Rivnuts without too much bother, unless you have the setting tool of course......I find them tougher than they look.
Any vibration or resonance, I cure with foam backed weather strip but there's no guarantee that it will be needed.
Wishing you well with your project!

Do let's know how you get on with the setting bolts.....I cobble mine up myself and usually get away with it.

Yes, I've looked at some youtube videos.

Just need to take my time. I have to decide whether to use alan key in drill bit or alan key by hand. I hope it tightens smoothly. What can possibly go wrong

I’ve had the odd rivnut that spun on its splines so I take care when drilling the setting hole but I’m sure you’ll be ok.
Good luck with it!
John
