We have just had the ceiling of a large room skimmed. We waited a week until the plaster had gone light pink, put on a mist coat of vinyl matt emulsion and then two more coats of the emulsion. The problem is that you can see the roller lines and from some angles it looks appalling - what have we done wrong? Any ideas very gratefully received.
Thanks

Like a lot of other jobs, there is a skill involved in painting. It is difficult to say what can be done now that the ceiling has been completed........ but putting the paint on too thickly, loosing the wet edge of the emulsion as you go across the ceiling, overlapping what you've already put on, there are a few things that could have caused the problem. Others on here more qualified will have ideas too.

Roughcaster.

I had exactly the same thing - i found with vinyl you had to use a very fluffy roller - not the synthetic types. Harris do nice ones, but the are'nt cheap, but they are way better than the cheapy ones from B&Q etc.

As roughcaster said there are quite a few reason that could have caused it..

Consider the size and type of roller..for ceilings id go for medium pile, 9 inch arm/sleeve.

The tempreture...if the room was warm or it was breezy then youll lose the wet edge quickly..try and do it when its cool.

Use an extension pole..

thin the paint out a little if you need to

Roll in bands away from the greatest source of light

Dont keep going over the same bit...youll cause orange peel.

Will take on board all your comments - thanks very much - am trying again today so will let you know if it works!
