Just thought I would throw this out & see if anyone could offer advice :
I'm building a 8.5 * 5.6 m double garage (gable ended roof) - it is going to be quite tall so as to have decent attic space.
Initially, I allways had it in mind to use a steel RSJ with cut rafters to form the roof (the wall has a double block thickness pier on each side to take the RSJ loading).
I'm now thinking I may be as well to just buy pre made attic trusses (quoted £1800) as they will be easier to erect, all loading is spread out (good thing imo) and if you add up the prices of timber, steel and calcs (reqd for RSJ and rafters), I doubt there would be much in it.
Just wondering what those in the trade normally do in this situation.
The quote may seem high, but I specced 2 window spacings, a stair way spacing and the wall plate is speced 800mm lower than the eaves height so as to create more headroom.
Also, any thoughts on glu lam as opposed to steel ?
