Hi guys, I am back after a long time away, I want to take the supports out for my current purlins which run from gable to gable, I am going to leave the wood purlins in place but i also want to add a rsj beam to beef it up but i am unsure on the weight or size it should be, the size of the rsj is not a problem but i think the weight would be so if anyone can give me a rough estimation of the weight it would be much appreciated, the length i need to cover is 18ft long, also what dimensions would the srj be. Thanks for any replies Ian

You need a structural engineer unless you want the roof to fall down, 18ft span will necessitate something like a 254x146 or 305x127. Weight around 40kg/m so around 220kg. As mentioned these are definitely estimates. If an SE specifies columns they could be a whole lot heavier.

would love to know why you think of those sizes......

one exteme to the other.....

Rule of thumb for beam depths innit, depth = 1/20th span, simples! Or least it is if you have all your marbles! ;)
