Roof Tile Bedding mortar

Hi All,

Can you use standard building sand and cement for bedding roofing tiles?

Most of the pre-mixes seem to be 3 to 1 Sand Cement

Yes you can.
Everyone has their preference on mix I wouldn't go less than 3:1 whether that's including sharp or not

But no issue using soft sand?

You say not less than 3 to 1 what is the ideal mix?

Tiles are Marley Mendip anthracite smooth if that makes any difference.

3 cement to 1 sand preferably
I joke 2 soft 1 sharp 1 cement is cool
Remix is colour fast and cool but depending on pugwork required may be tricky for an amateur tiler

Thanks again. I will have some help although they are not a roofer either but they are in the building trade.

What's the benefit of adding the sharp sand? It's cheap enough to get a few 25kg bags if required.
