Roof ventilation

I am re-slating a roof that once simply had wired glass, and am thinking about the ventilation.

Is it normal to leave a sufficient gap at the top and the side of the slating for ventilation as it meets the wall (below the lead flashing) (in conjunction with eave vents), or should I have slate vents.

If I use a slate vent to extract air from the room below will this vent "double up" as ventilation for the roof space even when connected to a vent pipe or would there not be sufficient circulation of the air for the roof in this set up?
