Roofer expectations

I am having my chimney repointed and all the leadwork redone due to water penetration.
I have a old, but still in good order red slate roof. The roofer has broken a few tiles.
Am I right in thinking my roof should be left in the same visual state as he found it?
I have been and inspected the unfinished job and I find new shiney black cement tiles, not in keeping with the rest of the roof.

Do you mean plain clay tiles?

Has your roofer got wings?
If not, then in all likelihood he will break some tiles in order to carry out repairs. Some plain tiles snap like biscuits. It seems he has just used some tiles he had spare as most plains are the same size.

If he was struggling to match then he should have removed tiles from a less conspicuous place on your roof and used these, then replaced those with the odd coloured ones.

He may have broke a tile 'n' half in which case his choice could have been limited.

However, If he had any pride then he should have tried to match.

No I don't mean clay. I said what I meant. I have a 1935 red/purple slate tiled roof and the replacement are a totally different colour modern flat shiney fibre cement tile.
I understand there is going to be some breakages, but I do expect those breakages to be replaced like for like. Unreasonable?

Slate or tile which one is it? I've never seen a red slate.

Red slate comes from Washington state New York so its unlikely that you have a red slate roof, that said I would not try and pass off fibre cement slate as red slate.

Apparently red fibre cement tiles were a popular import last century up to the 60s and the only replacements are these chappies http://www.marleyeternit.co.uk/Roofing/Slates/Thrutone-Fibre-Cement-Slate.aspx

Yeah very. Get yourself a new roof with some tiles that are locally available.
