can anybody tell me the best way to lift the felt on my flat roof without damaging it,so i can replace part of the wooden facia as it is rotten, there are a few clout nails to hold the felt, how do i lift the nails
Tricky one, though the nails are only very short but the heads are concealed.
The best way is to tease the mineral flashings away from the fascia with a bolster chisel. It gets more difficult the closer you get to a corner.
We have sometimes had to cut the ones nearest the corner with a hacksaw blade.
You then have the headache of dealing with the nails sticking out and fouling the new fascia. We use an angle grinder - but very carefully. It may be possible to punch them back into the new fascia using the flat part of the bolster chisel and a hammer.
If the felt is old and brittle, we give our flat roofer a call!
