I have got a lead, flat bottomed valley (6 ft long by about 2ft wide) It has rippled up and cracked. Had a quote to replace with felt (EPDM), 2 guys, 1 day - approx £560. 30yr guarantee backed with insurance. Guy says that lead would need expansion joints and not be best for job- slightly more expensive as carpentry work req'd. Intends to take out old lead/lift tiles and install felt. Is dropping off all worsk steps and felt spec and contacts for checking out prev. work, plus says he registered and inspected to install a specific felt (is going to supply accreditation plus contact nos too). In Berks - does this feel right? (He got me up the ladder with him and he pointed out where cracks were and showed where it was patched up with bitchumen in the past too etc) - is this about right?

Thanks all

That seems pretty steep that quote. I would try and get a quote from someone else for the lead to be replaced with lead as i can't see anyone giving a 30 year guarantee for a felt valley.

You want to double check he's replacing it with Felt or EPDM, Its 2 differant materials. EPDM is a rubber with a life expectancy of around 30+ years.

Steep  that`s not steep for a proper company Or do you expect Min. wage labourers on your house... ........I`d give a quote for lead/ rubber expansion joints welded into the existing .......and that`d be a day with one on roof and another firewatching inside roofspace with 2 water fire extinguishers.........provided the valley could be accessed from inside roof........but me and my technology are well above your expectations of £££

ALways use lead for valleys, EPDM is a type of synthetic rubber used on flat roofs, it isn't felt, he's talking through his hat. Lead is expensive about 150 quid for a 6 metre roll ,so if they are using lead and erecting a scaffold it could be ok. PS epdm can be bought for around £3.50 a sq m. so a 6 ft valley would cost around £7 pounds plus the cost of slates another few quid, depending on how many they broke taking the old valley out , incidentally the scrap value of the old lead valley would more than cover the cost of buying the materials for the new valley if they use EPDM.
