Hi There. Can anyone here help me with this problem I have up on the roof. From March to May, crows (Rooks) are gathering on my ridge tiles and using their powerful beaks to dig the mortar out between the ridge tiles and edges where the ridge tiles and the slates meet. Last year the roof and guttering were littered with large chunks of loose mortar, so much so that I called a roofer in to re point it all, unfortunately the same thing is happening this year, the Rooks started 2 weeks ago, they arrive at first light ( 5:30) and start hammering away noisily.
A mate of mine is a bird breeder, he explained that its happening because the Rooks lay eggs from March to May, and the female birds (Hens) need grit to digest as it helps both digestion and helps strengthen the egg shells, and some of the Rooks have taken a shine to my roof as a source of grit. Its illegal to shoot or harass wild birds so does anyone here have any experience with a similar problem.

Hi Barkas
Buy a plastic "Eagle-Owl" from your local Garden Centre and place it on the roof. That should keep them away

you can buy rolls of plastic spikes which you can glue to the top of ridges walls or cills to stop birds steeling.

Is it worth putting a load of grit on a bird table? Path of least resistance, and all that.
