i have a rectangular living room with two radiators of matching output at either end of the room on opposite walls. If i move one of the rads so that they then are both on the same wall but at opposite ends will it have any noticeable effect on the heating balance or will there be no change

You'll notice a difference in terms of where the little hot and cold spots are in the room, but, unless you impede the flow of air below, behind and above the radiator, then the overall output of heat to the room will be the same.
